Pyrotechnic pretensioners are not a single part. A test lab sees retractor-style and buckle-style units across a range of models and geometries, and each one has to be fired, restrained, and measured under conditions a regulator will accept. The awkward part is usually the fixture: rebuild it for every variant, and changeover time — not the test itself — becomes the bottleneck. At the center of the system is a seat fixture designed for full ECE 16 compliance — so the restraint geometry your results depend on matches the regulation rather than approximating it. Just as importantly, the fixture is made to flex across your product mix: most pretensioner models are accommodated by swapping small mounting plates, so moving from one variant to the next is a quick plate change rather than a fixture rebuild. The right measurements, retractor or buckle

The system fires the pretensioner in a safe, controlled environment and captures what actually characterizes its performance. For retractor-style units it directly measures seat belt linear displacement; for buckle-style units, buckle displacement. Across both, it records seat belt webbing load and belt anchor position load. From the displacement data, belt velocity and acceleration are calculated after the shot and made available for analysis. Acquisition is high-speed and SAE J211-compliant, so channels are conditioned to the same standard used across occupant-safety instrumentation — and high-speed digital video can be added when the deployment kinematics matter as much as the traces.


Automated firing, repeatable setups

Because a pretensioner is a one-shot pyrotechnic event, repeatability lives in the setup. The SureFire system runs the test fully automatically: it monitors and activates all safety and data-acquisition equipment, performs the controlled firing, and displays the results. Test parameters can be specified and saved per product, so setups for multiple pretensioners are retrieved instantly and adjusted when engineering requirements change. Transducer calibration data, event timing, and device addressing are all handled through a password-protected configuration screen, keeping the test definition consistent and under controlled access from one shot to the next.
